How Consignment Actually Works — The Smart Way to Sell a Luxury Watch
Most people who sell a luxury watch leave money on the table. Not because they don't know what their watch is worth, but because they don't know the options — and they end up taking the first offer that comes along, or selling to the first dealer who returns their call.
Consignment is the option most people skip. Not because it's bad — because they don't understand how it works. So let's break it down.
What Consignment Actually Means
Consignment means you hand your watch to a dealer, they list it, market it, handle buyer inquiries, and when it sells, you get paid. The dealer takes a commission — at FYTP, that's 7%, deducted only when the watch sells. No upfront fees. No listing charges. No "marketing fee" that comes out of your pocket before anything happens.
You keep ownership of the watch until it sells. You set a target price with the dealer's guidance. The dealer handles everything else — photography, listing, buyer communication, authentication questions, shipping logistics, payment processing. When the watch sells and funds clear, you get paid.
That's it. That's consignment.
Consignment vs Direct Sale — What's the Difference?
When you sell a watch directly to a dealer, you get a lump sum quickly — at FYTP, we make offers within 24 hours and pay same-day via Wire or Zelle when you accept. But the dealer needs to price the watch for resale, so the offer reflects a wholesale margin. You get speed and certainty, but you leave some money on the table.
When you consign, you're effectively selling to the end buyer yourself — the dealer is handling the process for you. You get a higher net price because you're not paying the dealer's full margin, just the commission. But you wait for the sale to happen, which could be days or weeks depending on the watch and the market.
Direct sale: faster, lower net. Consignment: slower, higher net. Both are legitimate — it depends on whether you need the money now or can wait.
How FYTP Consignment Works
Here's the actual process, step by step:
- You contact us. Tell us what you have — brand, model, reference, condition, whether you have box and papers.
- We evaluate and agree on a target price. We pull current secondary market data, look at recent comparable sales, and work with you to set a realistic asking price. Not a pie-in-the-sky number — a price that will actually move the watch.
- You ship the watch. We send you a pre-paid, fully insured FedEx label. You pack it, we cover the shipping and insurance.
- We authenticate. Our watchmaker — 60+ years of experience — inspects every watch we receive. Authentication takes approximately 24 hours from receipt. If there's an issue with the watch (condition, authenticity, anything), we tell you immediately.
- We list and market. Professional photography, detailed listing, and placement across our sales channels. We handle every buyer inquiry. You don't deal with a single message from a buyer.
- It sells. The buyer pays, funds clear, and you get paid. Our 7% commission is deducted from the sale price — that's the only fee. No hidden charges, no retroactive add-ons.
- You get paid. Same-day payment via Wire or Zelle once the sale is final.
When Consignment Makes Sense
Consignment is the right call when:
You're not in a rush. You can wait for the right buyer at the right price. If you need the money this week, take a direct offer.
You have a desirable reference. Steel sports Rolex, popular Omega references, and well-known Cartier models move quickly on consignment. Niche or less-traded references may take longer.
You want maximum value. You're willing to trade time for a higher net price.
You don't want to deal with buyers. No messages, no negotiations, no shipping to a stranger. The dealer handles all of it.
When Direct Sale Makes More Sense
Sometimes consignment isn't the move. Take a direct offer when:
You need the money now. 24-hour offer, same-day payment. Done.
The watch is hard to move. Less-traded references can sit on consignment for months. A direct sale gets you paid and moves on.
You don't want to wait. Simple as that.
The 7% Question
People ask why our commission is 7% when some platforms charge more. The answer is that 7% is what it actually costs to do this properly — professional photography, listing management, buyer vetting, insured shipping, authentication, and the infrastructure to reach buyers nationwide and internationally. We don't charge more because we don't need to. Volume handles the rest.
The commission is deducted only on sale. If the watch doesn't sell, you owe us nothing. If you change your mind, we ship it back to you — insured, on our dime.
What You Need to Consign With Us
The watch (obviously)
Box and papers if you have them (not required, but it helps the sale price)
A realistic expectation of what the watch is worth on the current market
That's it. We handle the rest.
The Bottom Line
Consignment isn't complicated. You hand us the watch, we sell it, you get 93% of the sale price. The only question is whether you can wait — and whether the extra money is worth the wait versus taking a direct offer today.
Most of our consignment clients are repeat sellers who figured out that the math works. Once you see the difference between a wholesale offer and a consignment net price, it's hard to go back.
